Fondation Robert Schuman is giving you a unique opportunity – to choose the first President of the European Council! Naturally, your vote won’t be counted during the summit next week, but then – who knows?
You can choose from Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Jean-Claude Juncker, Tony Blair, Herman Van Rompuy and Jan Peter Balkenende.
Of the candidates listed only two stand out, for me. First – easily my favourite – would be Herman Van Rompuy. An able diplomat and negotiator – where would belgium be without his ability to stitch together a working government? And that is the major drawback of his appointment as President of the EU Council. Wher would Belgium be without him? This is a question that other EU leaders ought to weigh in their considerations.
So, my second choice has to be Vaira Vike-Freiberga. She has shown her support for moral issues – and Latvians appreciated her Presidency, it seems. She also speaks several European languages, including French. And that counts.
