Council Shuns European Parliament on Assent Procedure

EUobserver reports that the Council has disregarded advice from its own legal service and has decided to exclude the European Parliament from negotiations on the new bank data deal with the US.

The Council has opined that the EP should not have co-legislative powers on the pact under articles 95 and 300 of the EU Treaty (TEU) in this case.

Such power feuds are not uncommon between the Council and the Parliament. However, I wonder whether there is a new trend of confrontation after the first failure of the codecision procedure in 12 years.
